TERRAFORM

Jiya Bhandari

The site is situated on a cliff, which naturally imposes constraints of steep gradients, limited access, and strong environmental exposure.Rather than treating these as limitations, the design approach uses them as key parameters for the spatial development.

The fundamental idea was to develop architecture that grows from the site, not on top of it.The existing levels of the cliff made each platform or terrace responding to a specific contour or vantage point. This created a multi-level system that allowed the structure to integrate with the topography while minimizing large-scale excavation or alteration of the natural terrain. These points defined the placement and alignment of built volumes. Instead of one continuous mass, the project is divided into smaller blocks that step down with the terrain, each oriented to capture specific visual connections — towards the sea, the valley, or the horizon. This stepping configuration also improves access to daylight and natural ventilation across all levels.
